Detroit Zoo

Located 2 miles north of the Detroit city limits, the Detroit Zoo is home to more than 3,300 animals representing 280 different species. The scenic 125-acre zoo features incredible natural habitats and wildlife exhibits that include the Arctic Ring of Life, Butterfly Garden, African Grasslands, Asian Forest, Great Apes of Harambee, Penguinarium and the Australian Outback.  Meet the tigers, apes,  black bears, red pandas, rhinos, and giraffes, ride the ornate carousel and see movies in the 4-D Theater. Many events are hosted at the zoo throughout the year, like Sunset at the Zoo and the Summer Safari Camp.

April 1 to Labor Day: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. labor Day to October 31: 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; November  - March 31:  10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

  • What Attractions and animals can i see at the zoo?

    The Zoo houses an amazing collection of animals from around the world in naturalistic habitats. Visitors can view lions at the African Grasslands, tigers at the Asian Forest, and bears at the American Grasslands. Check out exciting attractions, like the Wild Adventure Zone 4-D Theater and the Wild Adventure Zone Simulator, ride the Carousel or enjoy scenic views of the Zoo on the Tauber Family Railroad.

    Guests may bring their own food and beverages into the Zoo and enjoy several picnic areas throughout the grounds. The Detroit Zoo also offers a variety of dining spots and restaurants, including Artic Café, Safari Grill, American Coney Island, Kijiji Café, and Boardwalk Station.
